Psychiatric DMT: From Chace to Capello
I
Unit: Psychiatric DMT
Theme: Patricia Capello
Introduction
Like Chace, Patricia P. Capello also worked with mentally ill patients. Chace represents the origin of the field in the East coast and Cappello represents the present. She was a Senior Dance/Movement Therapist and Acting Team Leader for the Therapeutic Activities Service at Maimonides. Ms. Capello currently is Associate Chair of the ADTA's International Panel and trains and supervises students in DMT with a specialty in Psychiatry. Her methodology is uniquely hers. She uses pop songs to stimulate her clients movement expression. She combines dance with lyrics that have meaning and connect those who are familiar with the songs. Hers sessions end with meaning making which she conveys by verbally asking every client in her group what the lyrics meant to them personally.

STUDENTS' WORK
The purpose of the therapist is to
allow the clients to express how they feel, overcome how they feel, and
build themselves up. Allowing them to say how they feel and not feel
judged or pressured. Helps clients learn new skills with how to overcome challenges and improve their life and live it to the fullest.
A motive is a reason for doing something, the therapist might ask the
group to do a movement metaphor, which is a form of expressing yourself,
communicating, and dancing without speaking. The therapist would ask
the group to do this because it is a way to understand the clients and
understand the persons situation by seeing how they move and react to
the movement. How did that move make them feel? Good or bad? It provides
insight into the clients behavior and emotional status.
